Township Has 50 Candidates in Local Tickets

In Bessemer Township the Democratic and Citizens parties run again this spring with 50 total candidates filing for offices. Democratic ticket tops with 32 nominees in March 7 primary. Citizens lodge 18. Names list supervisors, clerks, treasurers, road officials, justices, park commissioners, and more for both tickets. Also Detroit’s Toy seeks Republican governor nomination in Michigan, backed by former governors Groesbeck and Osborn.

Bessemer Women’s Club Banquet Draws Wide Local Attendance

About 125 guests from Gogebic range communities attended the Tuesday banquet at the new city hall hosted by the Bessemer Women’s Club. Mrs. C. E. Anderson presided as toastmistress with formal program featuring speeches, recitations, solos, and community singing.

Finnish American Club social at new city hall

The Finnish American Club hosts a social evening at the new city hall auditorium on Sunday February 27. The program includes musical numbers instrumental pieces a 70 act play Nikuteemuksen Kosima with local talent. Lunch will be served and the public is invited.

Commissioner John B. Strange asks Governor Murphy for an extra 72 000 dollars to promote county township and district fairs in 1938. City settles bank funds claim for twenty two thousand

At a city council special meeting the city settled its claims to funds on deposit in the closed Peoples State Bank. The city will receive 22 080.28 dollars plus 866.38 dollars in costs with 25 percent of net proceeds to special attorney William F. Pellow. An assignment of the bank claim to Standards Accident Insurance Company is to follow along with a reserved interest in collateral.

Old Fort St. Ignace Project Approved by WPA

Plans for reconstructing Old Fort St. Ignace have been approved by the WPA in Washington. Work could start next spring on the stockade and buildings, with the fort overlooking the Straits of Mackinac and marking a landmark in the area. Local support comes from the St. Ignace Lions club and archival research by Rev. Fr. John Holland.
