The Bessemer Speed Boys lost 50 35 to Maple at A. D. Johnston gym last Friday. Maple pulled away in the third quarter after a close first half, holding a 23 16 lead at halftime and extending it to 41 23 after three periods. Tadevich led Maple with 12 points while Marconeri was high for Bessemer. The Speed Boys travel to Stambaugh Friday for a nonconference game.

Bessemer’s ROTC rifle team defeated Ironwood 1342 to 1325 in Ironwood. Richard Aho of Ironwood and Roger Relich of Bessemer led with 273s. Aho shot 90 standing to claim high individual honors. Bill Hayes Dies In Fort Dodge Iowa
William Hayes of Fort Dodge Iowa died January 23 after four months of serious illness. The body was sent to Oconto Wisconsin for burial in the family plot. Hayes owned and operated the Fort Dodge Riding Academy one mile west of Bessemer and was a familiar figure in local parades with his horses.

Four Vehicle Collision on U S 2 In Bessem er
A four vehicle crash occurred last Thursday at 7 40 am on East U S 2 in front of the Phil lips 66 Service Station Bes semer Wakefield. Injured passenger Mrs William Pikka was taken to Divine Infant Hospital by ambulance. The incident involved a White Pine bus from Edwin C Maxinoski Montreal carrying range miners, a Detroiter Mobile Homes semi truck from St Louis driven by Ted C Yates Shepherd, a car driven by Daniel J Rouna Wakefield with Russell Korpi as passenger, and another Wakefield car carrying several passengers including Mrs Tay Ann Wills Mrs William Pikka Mrs Ronald Pikka Mrs Michael Ortiel and Mrs Axel Harry. The bus was westbound the truck attempted to pass and skidded into a snow bank trailer jackknifed. Rouna eastbound struck the trailer rear wheels causing damage. Mrs Willa traveling west behind the semi collided with the rear of the bus.

Walter Newman, longtime A. D. Johnston High School principal since 1953, will become Superintendent of Bessemer Public Schools effective July 1, 1962, on a three year contract at 8000 dollars.
