Bessemer Girl Crowned Miss Winter Carnival 1966
Jo Lee Works of Bessemer, 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Works and a senior at A D Johnston High School, was crowned Miss Winter Carnival for 1966 at Colonial Skateland during the Duluth Skating Club show. Copper Peak ski project draws crowds and details
At the Bessemer Woman's Club meeting Earl Minkin outlined Copper Peak ski flying and jumping facilities. Panelists Samuel Davey and William L. Johnson described the plan including 120 meter and 90 meter hills, a two-story judges stand, press service, elevator, chair lift, and parking. Keweenaw Land Association donated 167.5 acres and a six-room bungalow to Gogebic Range Ski Corp, with a caretaker home to be moved nearby. The project aims to attract about 50,000 spectators per show and promote year-round attractions, while potential Olympic possibilities and extensive publicity bolster regional interest.
