Joseph Herbert a Monistique attorney and former state commander of the American Legion is expected to seek re election as a University of Michigan regent at the upcoming Republican state convention. A World War veteran and UM Alumni Association former district president, Herbert holds two A M degrees from Michigan, earned in 1915 and 1917, and is active in the Michigan and American Bar Associations. Two regents are to be chosen this spring, and UP representation has been lacking since 1982.

Pope Pius XI Dies in Vatican at 81
A Rome dispatch reports Pope Pius XI died today in the Vatican at five oclock. He was eighty one. The Holy Father had a recent setback described as cardiac asthma with influenza developing into bronchial pneumonia. He would have marked the seventeenth anniversary of his coronation on Sunday February 12.

Former Thomaston Mill Owner Passes
Mr. H. Miller aged 74 former Thomaston Gogebic county lumber mill operator died January 23 after a long illness at his home. He left Thomaston in 1919 to build camps at Cut River later entering the resort business gaining wide notice with hunters and fishermen from many states. Miller’s widow Mrs. Opha Perry Miller 76 died a week later from a paralytic stroke. Surviving child includes Mrs. M O Stanley of Thomaston.

The Gogebic Range Engineer's Club held its annual meeting at the St James hotel in Ironwood and elected Leslie Dick of Montreal as president, George W Koronski of Bessemer as vice president, and William Somppi of Ironton as secretary. Funeral services for Kalle Noisonen held at Moore
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Moore funeral home for 55 year old Kalle Noisonen with burial at Bessemer cemetery. Noisonen was found dead February 1 in a shack at Sir Mile Creek on the Black River road.

Pioneer resident Bertha Lintelmann dies at 77
Bertha Lintelmann, longtime Bessemer resident for 53 years, died last Friday at Grand View hospital at age 77 after a prior hip fracture. Born January 21, 1862 in Germany, she immigrated with family in 1865 and married Christian Lintelmann in 1881 at Two Rivers Wisconsin. The couple moved to Bessemer in 1886. survivors include son William J Lintelmann stepson Arthur Lintelmann and stepdaughter Mrs Ralph MeVick of Ashland. Funeral rites were held at Frick funeral home with Rev. Jesse D Epps officiating. pallbearers listed.

At the first of this month there were 617 telephones in service in the Bessemer exchange. A gain of during the previous month according to figures announced by D. E. Ferguson, manager in their area for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company. The company as a whole had 683,851 telephones in service at the first of the month, again last month of 5,133, and 16,126 since the first of the year. All queens selected at various Upper Peninsula winter carnivals will compete for Queen of the North at Ishpeming Feb. 21, Governor Fitzgerald will crown the winner. Isle Royale means "King's Island" and is a part of Keweenaw county.

Miss Camilli Third In Queen Contest Winner Narrowly Triumphs
Miss Vivian Randa of Ironwood won the Winter Queen Contest with 129,381 votes, followed by Miss Shirley Taylor of Ironwood with 121,682 and Miss Irma Camilli of Bessemer with 99,859. The winner was announced after Ironwood beat Iron Mountain 30 to 28 in a basketball game.
