Thomas O Boge a World War II navy veteran died January 26 at Rycom Island of Okinawa He was born March 2 1911 in Duluth and served as chief machinist He is survived by his mother Mrs Hanna Boge and two sisters Mrs Thomas Tollefsen of Chicago and Mrs Earl Manske of Los Angeles Funeral arrangements will be made on the arrival of the body.

City to Purchase Anderson Land in Water Supply Plan
Monday the city council endorsed buying 40 acres from Carl Anderson for 1200 dollars. The Board of Public Works supported the move as a water source expansion proceeds on the site. Anderson had asked 2000 for the parcel. condemnation valued three acres at 400 dollars. Boggio urged buying the full 40 acres for greater pollution protection.

Trustee Denies Ban Action At Grand View Hospital
The Duluth News Tribune report claimed three Gogebic county doctors were barred from Grand View hospital. Chairman Stuart Reid denied any official action to bar licensed physicians, saying no such action was taken. Prosecutor Theodore Albert said a state attorney general ruling was sought on staff rules and attendance requirements. Minutes showed 20 physicians admitted, including 17 regular and 3 courtesy members, with Albert not among them.

Adopt New Fire Dept. Ordinance for city
City council on Monday night adopted a new fire department ordinance replacing the 1895 measure to form a department with one chief and 29 volunteers plus paid firefighters as designated. The chief is chosen by firemen with mayor and council approval, and the foreman is appointed by the mayor with council consent. Volunteers earn $1 per hour at fires and $1 per practice session, with alarm signals of one blast for no volunteers and four blasts when help is needed. after 6 p.m. alarms are four blasts.

Youth Center Elects Officers At Mass Meeting
Over 100 youngsters from city and township attended at the Veteran's Memorial building for a mass meeting. Hal Hansen was named president Gordon Erickson vice president Jean Michela secretary Dorothy Johnson assistant secretary Lee Maccani treasurer Robert McKie assistant treasurer Mr William F Pellow spoke on the group’s aims and the youngsters’ responsibility. The Youth Center opens Wednesday February 15 with roller skating at 4 PM for grade school children. Adult membership signups are under way with dues of 1 per year. The board aims to raise 1200 to operate the center, and a 25 donation from the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce was recorded.

Last Rites Held For Wilfred Hill
Religious and military rites were held for Wilfred W. Hill who died in Fresno California the prior Monday Rev R J Larsen officiated. Military rites were at J Frick Funeral Home and Lakeview cemetery Wakefield with Veterans of Foreign Wars ROTC color unit and Bessemer high school firing squad assisting. Pallbearers included Robert Obradovich Joseph Martell John Bielecki Martin Pricco Albert Perotti and Louis Calligaro. Out of town relatives attended from Fresno Michigan Minnesota and Ironwood and range communities.

The Bessemer Boy Scout Troop No. 116 under American Legion sponsorship will honor 15 scouts with second class advancement certificates at a Monday evening meeting February 13 at the American Legion post. Certificates will be presented by the Legion Boy Scouts committee and announced on WJMS radio from 8 to 8:30 p.m. Parents are invited. Scout leaders Val Bielecki Carl Olson and Major James Richardson led the final exams on February 6. New members brought Troop 116 to 32. Telegraph service will discontinue at the Chicago Northwestern Station on February 15 and relocate to the General Insurance Agency offices. George L. Mazanec, an insurance agent, was informed by the Western Union district superintendent in Minneapolis. The transfer has been planned for months and service will remain the same. Messages can be telephoned or delivered in person. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
