Fatal blast at Ironwood shaft injures crew
One man died and four others were injured in a premature dynamite blast at the Newport shaft in Ironwood yesterday morning. Eino Mattila, 26, of Wakefield, died at Newport Hospital an hour after the 6 a.m. accident. Foreman Erwin Becker, 38, of Anvil, suffered critical injuries with eye loss and a skull fracture. Others including Mike Scavarda 43 of Tilden Heske Natti 42 and Victor Haapala 36 were less seriously hurt. all are married. The blast occurred during hole charging for blasting. the cause remains undetermined.

Upper Peninsula champions Bessemer High football and Reserve Officers Training Corps firing platoon received trophies in a Wednesday morning ceremony by the Bessemer American Legion. William F. Pellew presented the football prize to coach James Halama, who awarded it to captain Marco Gotta. Capt G. A. Anderson, ROTC commandant, presented the rifle trophy to Cadet Orville Eckman, captain of the second platoon, and Cadet Phillip Perotti won a high score medal from Captain Anderson. Capt Gotta and Eckman then gave trophies to Capt. C. R. Cobb as Bessemer High School property. Music was by the high school band under Harry Reinhold. The note ends with a humorous aside and a local bench line. The Mexican government has disposed of unissued 1937 silver pesos.

He served as alderman of the fourth ward of Bessemer for two years and lived in Anvil 14 years. Survived by wife and daughter Miss Josephine. Funeral at St Sebastian's church Saturday 9 am. Burial Hillrest Cemetery. Mrs Erwin Becker hosted Ladies Aid of Trinity Lutheran in Bessemer. The Anvil Patent-Teachers Association held a moving picture show at the school auditorium to benefit welfare work. The Junior Girls Club of Anvil plans a bake sale Friday February 3 with admission price set. Several local residents visited Iron River over the weekend.
