Reports indicate contracts to move 30 million tons of ore on the Great Lakes for the next season, about 9 million tons more than last year. Ship owners and mining men predicted a 50 million ton moving total, with thousands of carloads and new vessels under construction easing capacity concerns.

A branch union of the Western Federation of Miners was formed here last Sunday by a federation organizer. The charter shows no member count yet. Organizers have been active in the area for three weeks, and miners recall past strikes that caused broad disruption and costs, doubting renewed participation.
In Lansing on February 3 Auditor General Fuller reports a flood of license applications from foreign wholesale liquor dealers active in the Upper Peninsula following an investigation and three arrests in Escanaba. One agent vows to contest the case to challenge the law. The uproar began after a letter listing agents selling liquor regardless of law was sent to the Attorney General and prosecutors in the region.

The death of Gordon McDonald the two year old son of Mr and Mrs R McDonald formerly of this city occurred Tuesday morning at Gile at the home of Capt James Coole after a brief illness. Funeral was at Ironwood Thursday. Also Felix Babicky three year old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Babicky died Monday of scarlet fever and was buried in Bessemer cemetery Tuesday. The infant child of Mr and Mrs Frank Ahola died Monday and was buried in Bessemer cemetery. The six month old child of Mr and Mrs Matt Marusic died last Friday and was buried in Bessemer cemetery. Undertaker John Frick conducted all the funerals.
At St Sebastian church the marriage of Miss Annie Cychosz formerly of this city and Mr Jos Grzesik was solemnized by Rev Fr Swoboda at 9 oclock Tuesday morning in the presence of immediate relatives and friends. The bride wore white and a matching hat. They left for Ironwood to make their future home. The couple received many presents and are favorably known in this city.
A Manches ter Ohio man, Lewis Chamblin, credits Dr King’s New Discovery with saving his life after a severe cough and lung trouble dropped him to 115 pounds. He rebuilt to 160 pounds and can work again. he also says the remedy cured his four children of croup. Michael Carlson, a long time Ironton resident employed at the Ironton mine, died after being found at the bottom of a shaft Tuesday afternoon. He likely fell 200 feet, his cap found near the bottom. A coroner's jury adjourned to Thursday and returned a verdict of death by unknown causes. Funeral held Friday at the Swedish Lutheran church conducted by Rev. W C Ekeberg. Burial in Bessemer cemetery with Undertaker Johnson in charge.

Judge Knappen denies Higgins motion for a new trial in the Soo post office embezzlement case. Higgins, ex assistant postmaster, was convicted last September in Marquette US court after a lengthy trial linking the Soo robbery to his alleged receipt of funds. Defense argued new evidence and verdict against the evidence weight.

Miss Lula Scheal of Schofield and Fred Brunner of Beasmere were united in marriage at the bride’s brother’s home in Wausau on Wednesday January 25 at 4 30 pm. Rev FL Wahm officiated. Attendants were Miss Bertha Loppow and John Kersten. The couple will reside in Beasmere where Brunner works as a meat cutter for L H Troettner Co.
