In a Tuesday special election Bessemer voters approved ending the 15 mill tax and backed Light Massie Field with 283 to 135 votes. Only 425 ballots were cast as many voters failed to re register and could not vote.</S>
Robert Leskell 52, brother of Ramsay resident Mrs. Frank Rigotti, died in Johannesburg, South Africa, after a heart attack on January 24. He worked at the Anvil mine and is survived by father Andrew Leskell of Calumet and sister Mrs. Frank Rigotti of Ramsay.
James Boggio of Bessemer gives five dollars and Louis Michelli of Detroit sends two dollars and fifty cents to the Light Massie Field fund. Michelli praises Bessemer’s field and Briggs stadium, urging success for the Steelers Softball League.
At a meeting of the St Veronica s court of the Catholic order of Forresers plans were made for the observance of the Golden Jubilee to be held Sunday April 24 Special committees will plan details and a February membership drive names and roles were assigned Initiation of new members was scheduled for the March meeting A social time followed with refreshments provided by Mrs Dottie Re Mrs Isabelle Stelmark and Mrs Irene Pazdernik
The Presbyterian Mission Guild met Wednesday at the church for a guest night. Mrs. Battista Varda led devotions and Jeanette Olson led the study hour while Mrs. Robert Larsen handled current events. President Mrs. Albert Annear conducted the business meeting followed by vocal selections from Barbara Jean Olson, readings by Mrs. Emil Schoepke, and piano by Rev. R. I. Larsen.

The Michigan Bell Telephone rate case is adjourned while the State Supreme Court clarifies whether hearings may proceed during the 1946 rate reduction case litigation. Detroit and the attorney general sought dismissal until the 1945 case is resolved, a move denied by the Commission.
A plane crash in northern Saskatchewan involved biologist G A Ammann and a Canadian bush pilot during live trapping of ptarmigan for release in the upper peninsula. Eight birds are due to arrive at Sault Ste. Marie after a 20 hour flight and will be released north of Iron River. An earlier rail shipment failed. only one bird survived. The effort aims to establish ptarmigan as a new UP game bird.
The Puritan Yale Birthday club entertained members with husbands as special guests at the Bradley home. The recreation room featured decorations, cards and dancing. Elsie Peterson won the marathon prize for dancing. Hosts were Mrs. Andrew Bradley and Mrs. Henry Berg.
John Dale Ross son of Mrs Mae M Ross 911 8 State St recently promoted from recruit to private. He serves with 303nd mechanised Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop in the First Cavalry Division stationed at Camp Drake near Tokyo. He attended A D Johnston High School Bessemer before enlisting in 1948 after armored basic training at Fort Knox.
Mike Engleson 82 a pioneer Bessemer resident died Saturday at Infirmary hospital after a long rheumatism battle. Born September 21 1866 in Norway he arrived in 1895 and lived in Duluth a year before settling in Bessemer. He worked 36 years in farming and lumbering for Adolph Johnson. Survived by a brother Stephen in British Columbia.
State health department reports Gogebic county population fell from 20 243 in 1940 to 16 633 in 1947 a drop of 7 000 along with similar losses across the Upper Peninsula except Luce and Chippewa counties The statewide 1940 to 1947 rise is cited as 5 etc. A social event in Bessemer drew about 150 attendees at the Veterans Memorial auditorium hosted by the Women's club featuring a buffet dinner heart motifs music skits and dancing under the direction of Mrs W K Knight with performances by Gustave Ekman Mae Rodd Goldie Gray Emily Fauhl Lucille Brown Dora Rowett Ethel Hoeft Richard Duda Harold Peterson and Mrs Leonard Mayer The event was organized by the club social committee led by Mrs Herman LeClaire.
