A premature dynamite blast at the Newport shaft in Ironwood killed Eino Mattila 26 of Wakefield and injured four others including foreman Erwin Becker 38 who lost an eye and suffered a skull fracture. Mike Scavarda 33, Hiske Natti 42, and Victor Haapala 36 also sustained injuries as seven escaped. The crew was preparing holes for blasting when a charge exploded and the cause remains undetermined.
The Rev H Daib vice president of the Missouri Synod and Vision Director of the Lutheran Churches of the Missouri Synod in the Upper Peninsula will visit Bearemor Mar enisen and Winegar on Sunday for his fifth annual field visitation. A Monday morning meeting at the Trinity Lutheran Parsonage Moore Street will bring together Gogebic and Ontonagon pastors and missionaries under Daib for discussion of mission work.
Upper Peninsula champion Bessemer High School football and the Reserve Officers Training Corps firing unit were lauded in a Wednesday morning trophy presentation by the Bessemer American Legion. William F. Pellow presided, awarding the football trophy to coach James Halama, who passed it to captain Marco Gotta. Captain G. A. Anderson received the ROTC trophy and handed it to Cadet Orville Eckman, captain of the firing platoon. Cadet Phillip Perotti earned a medal for high rifle score, presented by Pellow to Captain Anderson for pinning it on Perotti. Captain Gotta and Eckman then gave the trophies to Captain C. R. Cobb, accepting them as Bessemer High School property. Music accompanied the ceremony, and the item ends with a stray aside about a diner. The Mexican government has disposed of unissued 1937 silver pesos.

A will filed for probate in Hollywood allocates 10000 for an organ in memory of Dr. Andrew Uren to the Hollywood Congregational church. Mrs. Louise Uren died December 21 at 67 leaving an estate of 100000 with preferred bequests to relatives and local organizations.
Fevoda aged 40s employed by Pickands Mather Co. was killed instantly while working as a miner at the Anvil mine in Bessemer Tuesday at 1 30 PM. He served as alderman of the fourth ward and resided in Anvil for 14 years. Survived by wife and daughter Josephine. Funeral Saturday 9 AM at St Sebastian church. Burial Hillcrest Cemetery.
The Besemer Heralds won two of three against Ironwood St James from local alleys as Tmda's Insurance took three straight from Ironwood Prarmacy. Individual scores include Muscatti 636, Kellett 653, Burt 652, Vitich 699.
Two former Hurley residents Dr. G. Vercellini and Frank Marta connected with Loco di Fresno a weekly paper in Fresno California. Marta edited and managed while Narta formerly worked on La Nostra Terra and now runs a fruit ranch near Fresno.

The American Legion hosted a Wednesday event to honor the local R. O. F. C. and the championship football team. The program featured National Matches and B. H. 8. Band, speaker J. Carpenter, football trophy presentation by W. F. Pellow, trophy acceptance by Coach Halama, football talk by Marco Gotta, ROTC trophy presentation by Capt. Anderson, ROTC trophy acceptance by Cadet O. Eckman, medal acceptance by Cadet P. Perotti, and both trophies accepted by Supt. C. R. Code.

Names include Tom Domenic, Jennie E. Korkonen, Joseph Brighenti Sr., Marian Jurakovich, and others across Ramsay Anvil North Bessemer and related townships.
The Peoples State Bank stockholders elect two new directors expanding the board to seven. Irwin J. Neault mayor of Bessemer and garage owner joins alongside Hjalmer V. Turpeinen second ward supervisor and logging contractor. Remaining directors are Dr. C. E. Stevens president J. Stanley Ramage vice president M. A. Hagerman Joseph Ochis and Alois A. Masanec.
At a Wednesday board of education meeting, the Schick test will be given to every pupil to determine immunity to diphtheria. Pupils not immune will be inoculated if parents consent.
Last rites for Mrs. Elisabeth Erickson, 72, who died last Tuesday in Newberry were held Saturday at 2 p m at the Finnish Lutheran church with Rev. Herman Matero officiating. Interment was in Hillrest cemetery. Pallbearers were Earlin Johnson Richard Kataja Hjalmer Erickson Matt Maki Frank Kurvonen and Akbert Halmeinen.
