A 65 year apart photo shows Bessemer’s evolution from a mining village with the Dolan house on East Mary Street to a modern county seat. Cement sidewalks replaced wooden ones as pioneers built the town with vision and faith.
A meeting at the Veteran's Memorial building approved roller skating sessions at the Youth Center starting Wednesday February fifteenth. Sessions target children through eighth grade six thirty to eight thirty for high school students eight thirty to ten thirty for high school students and adults. An executive board was formed with John Novascone as President and other officers and directors named including Lucille MacFarlane Rae Bucholtz Irene Masmagnetti and Rev David Harris among the directors.
Gedda Cychosz Post at the American Legion club rooms tonight donated 25 to support the Boy Scout fund.
Daniel J. Kulasavicz 64 prominent businessman of the city died Tuesday morning at St Marys hospital Duluth after months of heart illness. Born in Duluth January 3 1886 he came to Bessemer as an infant with his parents pioneers Kalasavicz. He attended local schools and was active in football. He studied at the University of Michigan for two years then worked as timekeeper in local mines. In 1915 he partnered with brother David A. Kulasovicz who opened Rex theater. From 1934 to 1942 they ran a restaurant next to the theater. He served on the Board of Education and Board of Trustees of Grand View hospital and was active in the Democratic party and Elks. Survived by wife and brother David Kalasovicz both of Bessemer. Remains to C W Moore Funeral Home.
James Thomas 75 longtime resident of Bessemer and Ironwood died last Thursday at his sister Mrs. William Gerry’s Yale location home. Born April 4 1874 in Delaware Houghton County Michigan he moved to Ironwood in 1887 and lived there with his sister Mrs. W P Smith and in Bessemer with another sister Mrs. Gerry. He worked in mines when young. Survived by two sisters and two brothers Fred and Richard of Marenisco. Funeral at Chappell funeral home conducted by Rev. Ivan O. Gonser entombed Riverside cemetery mausoleum.
A reader urges the editor to publish facts about Grand View Hospital Board of Trustees actions against Dr. S. G. Albert. She claims a January 19 1950 motion barred him from using the hospital after February 1 and prohibited him from bringing patients there, except in emergencies. She says the medical staff recommended these motions and asks citizens of Gospebic County to learn more.
Miss Lillian Watkins aged 47 died last Sunday. Private funeral held at C. W. Moore funeral home Bessemer officiated by Rev. Ronald Bassett. Born June 22 1902 in Marewiscco she is survived by her mother Mabel and brother Richard both of Marewiseco. Entombment in Riverside mausoleum. The Bessemer Woman's club sponsors a mid winter social on Saturday February 18 at Memorial auditorium entertaining husbands and guests.
The Gitche Gumee Council Boy Scouts of America launches its annual Finance Campaign from February 1 to 15 in the Gogebic and Chequamegon Districts to fund Scouting across six counties. District chairs include Stan Warner, Paul Steiger, and others with over a hundred leaders and volunteers supporting Cub, Boy, and Explorer units.
Eleven Boy Scouts of VFW Troop 115 earned their second class rating during a cold January hike twelve miles north of Thomaston. Under scout master William Lintelmann the group completed a five mile hike compass work tracking and cooking their own meal amid frosty conditions. Recipients of second class certificates on February 13 at a Radio Court of Honor include William Schneider Louis Dufrene Raymond Panosso Donald Martin Fred Lintelmann Rodney Johnson Earl Pelto Roland Kitto Richard Swanson Harold Erickson and John Lucas.伴
Billy John Carlson son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Carlson 1701 Barber Street marked his seventh birthday Saturday afternoon at home. Fourteen guests attended with games and a 4 o clock luncheon featuring a decorated cake as the centerpiece. He received many gifts from his friends.
The Council aims to add a Field Executive to live in Ironwood serving Iron and Gogebic counties while Peterson covers Ashland and Bayfield. This would create more units for Scouts and Cubs. The 1950 budget is 22785 dollars, with 9410 raised by Superior Douglas County Community Chest and the rest to be raised in Gogebic, Chequamegon, and Fish Bowl districts.
County Seat Post 3673 Veterans of Foreign Wars approved a 25 donation to the Boy Scout fund at its February 1 1950 session. The group selected four Youth Center protection signs for Lead street entrances and named Frank Drazkowski Jr as Buddy Poppy chairman for 1950. A Penny Social was set for February 23 with Sgt. Stanley Birk as event chair, aided by Major James Richardson John Bruckbauer and John Bielecki. Senior Vice Commander William Ryan announced banquet plans for February 18. Membership renewals were progressing with a March 31 deadline. After business, members viewed three films including Submarine Warfare in the Pacific and Invasion of Sicily and Battle of Italy.
Wodrazka named rink supervisor by the City of Bessemer and the Board of Education to manage the Massie field skating rink. A skating schedule is in effect with sessions Monday through Saturday 4 to 5 30 PM for under 12, 7 to 9 PM for over 12, Saturday afternoon and all Sunday hours for all ages, plus Saturday and Sunday morning hockey games.
Ramsay pioneer Michael Chlebowski, 79, died Tuesday evening at his home after heart trouble and old age. Born in Poland in 1876, he came to the U S in 1900, lived in Wakefield briefly, then Ramsay for 45 years as a blacksmith at the Eureka mine. He retired in 1946 and served in the Russo Japanese War before emigration. Survived by widow, three sons John Ama ton and Louis, eight grandchildren. Funeral Saturday at Christ the King Church, Wakefield services at J Frick funeral home. Interment Hillcrest Cemetery Bessemer.
Wilfred Waldemar Hill 37 a former Bessemer resident and World War II veteran died last Monday at his Fresno California home He was born May 16 1912 in Wakefield came to Bessemer as an infant and attended local schools After graduation he worked as a chef in various resorts before entering the military August 4 1942 He served in European campaigns and was discharged November 1945 In 1943 he married Dorothy Bushie of Bessemer He was an inactive member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars He is survived by his widow his mother Mrs Caroline Maki two sisters Mrs John Baksic and Mrs Eino Syremi and one brother Edwin Hill of Jackson Michigan.
