The Greenland printing plant of the Twin City Independent at Greenland was sold at public sale Thursday by Attorney Arthur H Brown to satisfy a mortgage held by Barnhart Bros. & Spier of Chicago. Levi S. Rice of Bessemer bid in $350 for a new company planned to launch a paper at Bessemer.
The Oliver Iron Mining Co will lay off 520 workers across its Ironwood Bessemer and Iron Belt mines on January 1. Discharges break down to 385 at Ironwood four mines, 80 at Tilden in Bessemer, and 55 at Atlantic in Iron Belt, with priority to married men and those with dependents kept at work.
By a vote of T to 6 the committee on taxation and finance recommends diverting part of railroad and other corporate taxes from primary school support to other purposes as designated by the legislature.
