Local notices report parochial schools closing for Christmas vacation and reopening January 4. Other items include jury duty for Frank Abelman, travel by Ken MacFarlane and W F Pellow's Chicago trip. Public library hours during vacation, regional mumps epidemic, WPA sewing center changes, and various local personnel moves are noted.
Five years ago the Herald notes Miss Hedwig S. Barth RN of Milwaukee began as supervisor of Grand View hospital operating room, succeeding Miss Lucille Taylor. The hospital received 450 applications from nurses nationwide for the post.
Traditional Christmas roast beef featured with stuffed prunes and a glide from revolving spits to modern insulated ovens. The article explains low steady heat, fat side up, no water, no rack, and doneness guidance by time per pound and a meat thermometer. It also lists a Christmas menu and notes a Legion auxiliary party with Santa and gifts for more than 100 attendees.
The pupils of St Sebastian parochial school will present a Christmas program at the Washington school gymnasium next Sunday afternoon and evening.
A public sacred concert by Sharon Lutheran church junior and senior choirs is set for Sunday at 7 30 p m. Miss Astrid Hansen directs the program with Miss Sigrid Flaa as accompanist. Kenneth Farb of Augustana Theological Seminary Rock Island Ill will speak.
The Bessemer Women’s Club held a social afternoon Tuesday at the Legion building. In 600, honors went to Mrs. Sidney Proctor, and in contract bridge to Mrs. James Nemacheck, Mrs. G. N. Eade, Mrs. C. Carlson and Mrs. William McMinn. Lunch was served by Mesdames W. K. Gray, Archie Chisholm, M. A. Gedda and Oscar Hansen.
Minerva Chapter No. 122 R A M elected officers Wednesday night led by Paul Becker as high priest and Ed Neidhold of Wakefield as king. John Landon of Ironwood was scribe and Jack Gribble of Ironwood captain of host. Other officers include William McMinn as principal sojourner Norman Dahlin of Ironwood royal arch captain Conrad Velin master first veil Carl Berling master second veil Gustave Ekman master third veil C A Olson secretary Ralph Olson treasurer E H Ekman sentinel.
A brief midday meetup brought together G rew Buchkutyee Merlo Alexater George Abraham and several attendees for informal conversation over meals. The event highlighted community ties and regional group interests without formal program content.
At the January meeting the Am Legion will hold a jam and jelly shower for the children’s billet.
Miss Lila Saart of Ironwood and Robert Stevens Becker son of Mr and Mrs Fred Becker Keewatin Minn were wed Saturday noon Rev H C Cooley officiated at the home of the bridegroom’s grandparents A S Johns Kin Sylvia Saari sister of the bride and Vernon Becker attended Immediate relatives attended the ceremony and luncheon The couple will reside in Keewatin where Becker is employed by M A Hanna Co Mrs Becker formerly served as secretary in the Ironwood school board office.
