Olson Retires After 41 Years With Bessemer Fire Dept
lifelong Bessemer resident Arthur Olson retires from 41 years of service in the local fire department. He began in 1918 under Mayor Byrne, returned in 1923 under Mayor Gedda, and worked 24 hours daily in early years. The department evolved from hand drawn hoses to modern trucks, with shifts changing to 12 hours in 1923 and a 1947 truck purchase. Olson recalls major fires, including the 1951 Donich building blaze in 20 below weather, and team trophy runs in the Upper Peninsula District Tournaments. He leaves a legacy of local service, family ties, and community involvement through church and lodges.
