The Oliver Iron Mining Co a unit of United States Steel shipped 10 362 895 gross tons of iron ore from the Lake Superior district in 1935 up from 8 746 359 in 1934. Seventeen mines listed this season versus nineteen in 1934 with Gogebic range at 562 158 tons. The Puritan mine produced 204 341 tons and the Norrie group 357 817.

Peterson Killed in Auto Accident in Seattle
Charles Frederick Peterson, 54, former Bessemer resident, died in an automobile crash on an icy viaduct in Seattle on November 21. He was born in Ashland, moved to Bessemer at age three, worked as a driver for Crosby Sand & Gravel, and was active in Masonic and labor organizations. Surviving his widow Signa, daughter Helen Kerr, and siblings James Peterson and Ebba Wahlberg. Funeral services were held November 23 under Greenwood Masonic lodge. burial in Crown Hill cemetery, Seattle.

Cost Of Fighting Forest Fires Drops In Lansing
Lansing Michigan reports a sharp drop in forest fire suppression costs this year due to record low fire damage. Total suppression costs, including impressed labor wages of keymen and private teams and tractors, reach $18,229.76. Impressed labor paid 20 cents per hour and keymen 25 cents. Last year’s costs for similar items and period were about $93,006.

City seeks injunction over sewer creek site title near railroad
An injunction suit was entered Tuesday in circuit court before Judge George O. Driscoll by the city of Bes semer against Louis Zawicki. The city seeks to prevent the filling of Sewer creek and to clear up the land title at the site near the Duluth South Shore railroad. A brief of the city's case was filed and Zawicki's counsel was given five days to answer.

Christmas Spirit Shines in Bessemer Business District

Gogebic County Health Council mailed Christmas seals to residents. The seal sale funds support tuberculin tests in schools and chest X-rays for reactors. In 1934-35, 1735 tests were given with 659 X-rays. three schools had 10 cent tuberculin tests and four had 100 percent chest X-rays on reactors. Proceeds compare favorably to last year.

Postmaster Gotta Declared Ineligible for Open Exam

Gotta’s bid to be reappointed as Bessemer postmaster was rejected for not being eligible to enter the open competitive examination.
