Eldredge Named President of Duluth South Shore & Athentic RR

Confirmation arrives that Arch B. Eldredge will become president of the Duluth South Shore and Athletic Railway, succeeding W. F. Fitch who resigns effective November 30. Eldredge, now first vice president and general attorney, will assume Dec 1. Directors met in New York November 26 and elected Eldredge, with W. W. Walker named director in place of Walter Ko Baker. Both Eldredge and Walker are Marquette and Duluth residents respectively.

Fatal double collapse at Yale mine leaves families unknown

At Yale Mine last Saturday two miners Stanley Corrin and Chas Davoli were entombed. Corrin was recovered dead and Davoli died Sunday afternoon from his injuries. Corrin was buried Tuesday with Fraternal Order of Eagles at services. Davoli’s funeral followed as Italian societies accompanied the remains. Both men worked on the 12th sub under a captain's instruction to stay put, yet a company diagram shows they were elsewhere when found.

Knox Idea Proposes Tax Shift for Schools in State

W Frank Knox of Sault Ste. Marie suggests two amendments to the state constitution. One would apply all railroad and similar corporate taxes to the primary school fund for state maintenance. The other would require county assessing officers to levy a primary school tax to replace the fund.

Compromise Proposed To Lighten Corporate Excess Tax

A special session tax plan may include a compromise to tax corporate excess at about a $3 million revenue level. The change would remove the average rate nuisance for corporate excess while preserving the rate basis for railroad primary school land taxes. Inheritance tax adjustments could add about $1.5 million to the general fund, with interurban rails matching, leaving roughly $3,000,000 to be raised via corporate excess.
