The Republic mine on the Marquette range was sold to Cambria Steel Company for 1,500,000 dollars. The mine, one of the oldest in the upper peninsula, began operation in 1871 and has produced 4,910,252 tons of high grade Bessemer ore. Current ore grades run about 68 percent iron with phosphorus around .66 percent.
