Funeral Rites Held Friday For Pioneer Frank Gustafson
Funeral services were held Friday for Frank Oscar Gustafson 80 longtime Ironton mine surface foreman who died Tuesday of a heart ailment at his home in Bessemer. Born March 10 1878 in Arvika Sweden he came to Bessemer as a youth and lived there since 1892. He retired in 1931 after 33 years at the Ironton mine and served 12 years on the Bessemer township board. He married Henricka Peterson in 1899 and they observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1949. Surviving are his wife three daughters one son five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Interment was in Hillcrest cemetery with pallbearers Edwin Berg Henry Berg Howard Brown Albert Jacobson Carl O Anderson and Andrew Bradley. Relatives and friends from out of town attended.

Marriage Announced At Open House In Ironwood
The marriage of Dennie F Sevegny and Minerva Lobb was announced after an open house at their Ironwood home on Lake Road. The couple wed in Marquette on June 29. Mrs Sevegny is the former Miss Minerva Lobb daughter of the late Edward C Lobb of Bessemer. About 100 guests attended 3 to 7 pm with seasonal flowers, a buffet, and arrangements of Golden Glory roses and white pompons in a silver bowl.

Bessemer Firemen Win In Races At District Meet
The Bessemer track team swept the Upper Peninsula district convention events at Crystal Falls last week winning first in the four man speed race, four man tank race and five man coat and boot race. They took second in the six man hose exchange and five man ladder climb. In the two man coupling race they drew no time. Teams competing included Bessemer Calumet and Hecla and Negaunee.

Bessemer won the 1954 U. P. Firemen's tournament bid over Ishpeming and Munising and will host the event after entertaining Crystal Falls last week. Local 30 members paraded. Janet Borgaro won baton contest third place. Val Maccani won night shirt parade first prize. The track team, led by Capt. Art Olson and others, earned $95 in prize money despite injuries.

John Laurila Puritan Resident Dies in Wakefield
John G. Laurila 62, Puritan, died last Thursday at 7 30 am at Divine Infant of Prague hospital Wakefield after a cancer illness. Born August 31 1890 in Lempala Hameen Laani Finland he came to the United States in 1918 and lived in Ironwood since 1919. He worked at the Ironton mine 25 years later at Underwood Mill and then Connor Land and Lumber Co. He married Venni Pokela in 1920 and is survived by two sons William and Elmer Laurila of Chicago and stepson Dr Raymond W Polk Miles City Mont. Funeral was held Monday at J J Frick Funeral Home with Rev Arnold Ranta officiating. Burial Hillcrest cemetery. Pallbearers were Albert Hanson Benjamin Harris Toivo Lustig Hiski Romo Frank Johnson Peter Puro. Out-of-town relatives included William and Elmer Laurila Bruce Crossing area and Miles City Mont families and others from Ishpeming and Bruce Crossing region.

Pat Cvengros Emerges As Top Michigan Legion Player
Pat Cvengros a burly 17 year old righthander from Ironwood Michigan was named the most valuable player in the Michigan American Legion state tournament at Bay City. The 6 foot 2 righty starred in prep and Legion games posting a 23 2 record with 332 strikeouts in 207 innings while pitching two six hitters and a perfect game this season. Scouts from many clubs watched including Pete Fox and Clare Whelpley as CVengros drew comparisons to Hal Newhouser and drew praise from Detroit manager George Beauregard.

Boy's Town Choir to appear here next month
The Boys Town Concert Choir will perform in Beaste r on September 29 at A D Johnston High School Gym. Director Father Francis Schmitt selected 50 choristers from over 200 Boys Town youths, after a 16,000 mile US-Canada tour that produced 80 concerts in three months. Mrs Felling Dies at Wakefield Pioneer of Bessemer
Nellie Hope Felling 76, of Bessemer, died Tuesday at 10 a m in Divine Infant of Prague hospital Wakefield after a long illness. Born Nellie Kimball in 1876 at Wausau she lived in Merrill Bloomington Vienna and Bloomington before moving to Bessemer. She married Ernest Felling in 1910 and helped run his leather goods business after his death in 1941. Active in Dorcas Chapter Eastern Star Veterans Auxiliary and Presbyterian Church she was survived by two sons Kimball and Garrett, a sister and a brother. Funeral set for Friday at 2 p m at the Presbyterian Church with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery.
