Bennett seeks fishing funds to fight lamprey in Great Lakes
U S Congressman John B Bennett seeks 1 051 000 in funding for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission to extend lamprey control from Lake Superior to Michigan. He notes an increase of 132 054 over 1963 spending and cites Canadian cooperation, chemical treatment effectiveness, and the fishing industry’s revival in Northern Michigan as justification. The plan follows a cost share with the U S paying about two thirds and Canada one third. Bennett stresses the region’s economic importance amid mining declines and calls for accelerated action to restore Great Lakes fisheries.
