Fire fighters registered for UP tourney by department
A total of 457 Upper Peninsula fire men registered at city hall for the tournament this week. Represented were 35 departments with Gogebic range contributing 163 and the rest of the UP peninsula 294. Two Wisconsin departments Hurley and Montreal were also in the list, Ironwood sending 41, Ishpem inge and Ewen leading outside Gogebic with 21 each, and Marquette Lake Linden and Red Jacket with 17 each. Registering firemen include numerous named individuals from Ontonagon Ishpeming Gwinn Wakefield and more across multiple towns and agencies.

Three Gwinn girls aged 14 to 16 hitchhiked to the city and were found sleeping in a hay barn near the north city limits. They were returned home after county and sheriff’s office contact. Main street carnival caused heavy traffic with extra police on duty. A car driven by John Scavarda Jr. hit John Re of Palms location on Main Street. Re sustained minor injuries and was taken to Grand View hospital.

Tree Sitters Flight Ends In Upper Peninsula Contest
Hugo Aho, 15 of Bessemer, ends a tree sitting endurance event after 11 days 6 hours with 270 hours credit. He slipped from the platform Tuesday evening at 6:50 o'clock but sustained no injuries. The event began July 18 and moved from Olcott school grounds to Longyear street. hundreds visited for BESSEMER tree fitting. Funds raised totaled about 16 dollars.

Auto stolen from Kronwood owner Adolph Mueller

George D. Ferrari of Bessemer received the athletic council medal at Michigan State College for high scholarship and athletic achievement. A three year state football letter recipient, he was also a Bates wrestling team member and Michigan AAU heavyweight champion. The county fair rapid entry day is August 22 with judging on August 23 in all departments. Dairymen and poultrymen should prepare their animals and birds, enter by morning, milk cows by 6 oclock for the dairy production contest, and exhibitors are urged to study the premium book for correct listings. State fair winners will be chosen for Escanaba, with travel arrangements to the State Fair at Escanaba August 11 to 23. Garden crops, fruits, and grains are urged to be well displayed despite uneven mature growth across crops.

Gordon Jewell Dies in Detroit After Car Crash
Word reached Reese about the death of Gordon Jewell, a former resident, who died Monday, July 28 in Detroit from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. The 40s era figure married and made his home with his sister in Detroit after moving away years ago. The funeral service was held Thursday evening in Detroit.
