A Bessemer man named Scavarda urged a Detroit audience to drill and not lash for boys, delivering a stance on discipline and behavior. The address emphasized constructive, self-improvement approaches over punitive measures.
Captain C J Seavarda of the state patrol, in charge at the Lansing Industrial School, told Lansing women reformers that discipline must start with drill and recreation time while noting poor living conditions. He described roofs that leak and cottages in disrepair, and warned that reforms will take time but expects Governor Groesbeck to push a new building program within four years. He said some older boys should not be there and highlighted a deaf inmate needing attention.
Dr W I Robinson of the Michigan geologic survey surveys Seul Choix point district east of Manistique for oil and gas potential. State geologist R A Smith notes an anticline structure with Trent on limestone 1000 feet below surface and says drilling is only way to prove commercial quantities. He warns the project is a long shot for big investors, not small ones.
Mrs Louise Clark wife of Erick Clark of this city died after a lengthy illness from tubercular meningitis at 7 50 am Monday at the family home. Her death follows the loss of a son George in March and she leaves a husband two sons Leonard of Iyer and Thea Niemi of Wakefield a daughter Funeral services were to be held this afternoon at the Saron Lutheran church
Funeral services for Mrs Joseph Novakoski of Wakefield were held at the Catholic church with three priests officiating. Burial occurred in Bessemer cemetery after the Wakefield ceremony. She died in Ashland’s St Josephs hospital following an operation after a lengthy illness. Survived by husband and nine children Roman John William Ben Edward Modiste Verna Lucy and Josephine.
Christ Evanoff of Wakefield and Tom Lezeroff Ben Elias and George Stoyness are jailed on charges of taking part in a hold-up of two Hurley men on the county road near Plymouth. Deputies arrested Evanoff in Wakefield and the others in Iron River. They are likely to stand trial this term. An odd aside urges people to disclose their income to avoid more calls.

Under the Bessemer boy scouts auspices the Ramsay Dramatic club presents Five Feet of Love in the high school auditorium Tuesday evening May 3 at 8 15 o clock. The club recently staged the play with great success. The notice invites readers to devote an hour at church on Sunday as thanks for life health and happiness.
Frank W. Roman, manager, calls all city and range players who seek tryouts to meet tonight at 8 in the American Legion club rooms. The session will outline practice plans and assess talent for the squad, with former players urged to attend and aid the effort.
An Overland tourer carrying two Ironwood men rolled on a county road between Ramsay and Bessemer in a likely speeding crash. Alex Hautala died at Union Hospital Ironwood from a fractured spine and internal injuries. William Turmonin survived after his injuries were dressed and released.
Otto B Olson, local Case agent in Gogebic county, has sold a 15 27 power Case kerosene tractor to the Gogebic county road commission and delivered it this week. He also reports a 10 18 kerosene tractor sale to John Nordin of Wakefield. The Case agency in Gogebic county grows more active under Olson’s management.
Architect Derrick Hubert presented plans for an $84,000 hotel to the Bessemer Hotel company stockholders. The three story structure will stand on Lead and Moore streets with a 20 room basement and 21 rooms on the upper floor, including ten private baths. The lobby dining room and lunch room will feature terrazzo floors, gumwood trim, and Caen stone accents, with an elevator serving all floors and dual fire exits on two sides.
The 1921 ore season opened in Ashland as the steamer Tomlinson tied at the Soo line ore dock to load ore destined for Bufto. Ice in Ashland bay is lighter this year. last year the first ore boat loaded on April 22.

Early tests in Livingston county report 500 herds over 600 cattle tested with 2 percent reactors, while human tuberculosis cases rose 491 in the 1921 quarter.

The Michigan Pikes association under Fred S. Co of Sault Ste. Marie plans its sixth annual Pikes tour starting in Detroit in July. The journey will pass Gogebic County and aims to surpass last year’s record with international links between Canada and the United States, covering around 1,700 miles and including water transport on the route.
