Fred Roberts, born in Wisconsin Rapids when it was Centralia and Grand Rapids on opposite sides, recalls watching rapids with his father. After stints as foreman for Indians in Odanah and mine work across the range, he settled in Bessemer in 1895. He married Josephine Cerveny in 1887 and raised eight children. His career spans Ashland, Hurley, Ramsay, and Milwaukee with loyalties to friends like Guy Couch and Capt. Knight. He enjoys fishing, hunting, and deer season.

Bessemer High Divides Honors With Wakefield In Forensic Contest
Two Besemer students placed in a Wakefield speech contest with both schools earning two first places. Marjorie Koronski won dramatic with Maxwell Anderson’s Mary of Scotland. Laurette Hansen of Wakefield took second with The Burgomaster. Other winners included Jack Brown of Bessemer and David Tresize of Wakefield in oratorical contest, Natalie Mattson and James Haskins in declamation, Eunice Kranz and Janice McKie in extemporaneous speaking. First place winners advance to May regional at Trout Creek. The report also notes rubber conservation measures by the U S Army reducing crude rubber use by 45 percent and increased use of animal drawn vehicles at posts to save tires.

Funeral Rites Held For Rose W Burt Saturday
Funeral services were held last Saturday afternoon for Miss Rose W Burt who died last Wednesday. The services took place at John J Frick Funeral Chapel with Rev C E Harries and Rev F E W Eastman officiating.
