The Second War Loan drive opened Monday April 12 in Bessemer with Gogebic County aiming to raise 290000. Longyear Street's Mr John Ball Honored In Local Tribute
John Ball of Longyear Street, born November 21, 1859 in Ipsington Devonshire England, emigrated to Brockville Canada at age 21. He came to Ironwood in 1891 to work for the Electric Company, later serving 41 years as courthouse janitor before resigning last year. He recalls early board members, delivered county mail daily, and once ran for sheriff. Ball, a longtime Mason and member of the Brotherhood of America, married Emily Judge in 1891. three children and his wife are now deceased. He enjoys occasional beer and keeps active in life despite aging.

Aged resident Josephine Klauvinski dies at 75 in Bessemer
Funeral services held Wednesday for Mrs. Josephine Klauvinski 75 who died Saturday evening after illness since November. Born in Poland March 10 1868 she came to Bessemer at age seven. She leaves three daughters four sons a sister and a brother eight grandchildren and several out of town relatives attended.

School Board approves pay raises and debt payoff
At last night’s meeting the school board approved a ten dollar monthly to salaries for the Washington school principal teachers janitors and clerks. The district paid the final bond installment of 11565.00 on May 15 clearing all indebtedness. School taxes will fall from 25.2 to 20 mills next year as a temporary budget is reviewed with permanent figures to be submitted.

H. M. Wick, 59, former Ironwood mayor, died Sunday afternoon at his Ironwood home after a lengthy illness. He was a jeweler before retirement ten years ago due to ill health. Wick served as mayor from December 1935 to July 1936 and again from April 1938 until he resigned the commission for health reasons.
