City Holds Special Gas Election for April 20
The city council set Monday April 20 as the date for a special election on whether to ratify a gas franchise to C Cicero Ogle and associates of St Louis Mo The five wards polling places will be open 7 am to 6 pm with registration Saturday April 18 City attorney Michael E Nolan announced a cashier s check of 150 from Mr Ogle for election expenses Election commissioners were named and inspectors chosen for each ward The council also approved funds for an alley construction and moved several barns Future tax roll corrections were referred to the finance committee and City Assessor Leo Mueller noted faulty descriptions costing about 750 annually in revenue Mayor Otto presided over his final meeting as new members prepare to qualify and the organization meeting will follow.

Funeral held for Mrs George Aijala in North Kessemer
Mrs George Aijala 45 of North Kessemer died Monday night after a long stroke illness dating to 1928. Survived by husband two sons George and Eugene and three daughters Elmi Ethel Kelsie. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm at St Paul Finnish Lutheran Church Ironwood officiated by Rev Herman Matero. Ironwood Wins First Annual Range Swim Meet
Ironwood high school clinched the inaugural range swimming meet at the Wakefield Community building pool with 30 points. Wakefield 27, Bessemer 21. The team, coached by Neu mark and Carpenter, took three firsts one second one third and one fourth including 160 yard relay and 40 yard free style. Bessemer earned the 160 yard relay trophy. Also noted, a card from Congressman W Frank James reported from San Juan Puerto Rico.

Slips Candidates Lose in Township Election
In Jessemer township four slip candidates were defeated as the Peoples ticket swept the race. John Hild won re election as supervisor by 542 votes over James Hoskins. Gustafson captured the treasurer post with 233 votes. Marian Jurakovich beat Charles Jalonen for highway commissioner by 288 votes, and Joe Lucca won the first district highway overseer seat over Isaac Lohikoski. Light vote cast in city election Monday
With only one ticket in the field a light vote was cast in the city election last Monday. The capital punishment proposal was badly defeated in Bessemer and swamped in Gogebic county. Two other amendments on state aid for airports and refunding of bond issues also were defeated. Irwin J. Neault was endorsed for mayor to succeed C. A. Otto, Joseph L. Gotta for city clerk to succeed himself and Leonard Re for city treasurer to succeed Martin Brown. Frank B. Abelman Norbert P. Achatz John P. Ballone and A. John Anderson were re elected supervisors while Hjalmer V. Turpeinen is the new county board member from the second ward. James Proctor Raymond Skwor and Peter A. Cena were re elected aldermen. Paul Becker succeeds W. W. Gray as alderman in the first ward and John B. Brusso takes the place of Charles Fendo on the city council from the fourth ward.

Capt. A. B. Pence, long in charge of the ROTC unit at Bessemer High School, will be transferred to Fort Lincoln at Bismarck, North Dakota. Capt. Gustav A. M. Anderson of Fort Lincoln will take command at Bessemer and head ROTC at Ironwood High School next fall, effective May 1.

Marquette Prison Population Hits 1100 After Influx
The Marquette branch prison population rose to 1100 after three prisoners arrived from G-Mesee county, the highest in about two years. The facility holds 660 inmates, and since November 1930 only five men have been paroled with no transfers.

Right of Way Delays Tula Road Project
