The Citizens party swept city offices except one in a close election. Mayor Henry T. James trailed Clarence W. Moore by 11 votes, 960 to 949, after wards results showed Moore dominant in the fourth and fifth wards while James won the first, second, and third wards.
The Citizens party won eight of fourteen offices in Mondar with Leonard Carlson defeating incumbent Nesto Erickson 734 to 650 for the supervisor seat. Democrat Matt Koski beat William Harris for clerk as 761 to 663. Albert Tillner edged Joseph Brighenti Sr. for board of review.
Members of the third ward election board face a court hearing on Monday April 19 after Clyde Whitburn claimed he was an authorized Democratic challenger barred from observing ballot counting. He alleges obstruction as Mooré considered a recount amid a tight race in Bessemer where mayor and clerk results were reported. Leo Mueller keeps city clerk post, Albert Marzari unopposed as treasurer, and three new aldermen plus re elected supervisors shape the council.
Leo J Isdebski post commander of Peter Gedda post of the American Legion has announced the committees for forthcoming events. The Memorial Day program on May 30 is led by Michael A Gedda with Joseph Jezek and August Dahl. Fritz Frederickson post of Ramsay cooperates with the Bessemer Legion. John H Hild and Arvo Wakevain en serve on the committee. The Military Ball will be held June 4 at the Irondrome with James Carpenter heading the committee. The 4th of July celebration with the Bessemer Business Men's Association lists Joseph A Abelman as chairman and includes Dr E J Kuivinen H J Hansen Walter Supercynski Dr R J Mullen James Roggio Emil Marander Andrew Bradley and Hugo Keenan.
City Clerk Leo F. Mueller now occupies his office in the new city hall at the head of Main street after a weekend move. James Boggio water works superintendent James Trebilcock city engineer and Alfred Arola street commissioner share a joint office in the new hall. The fire department remains in the old city hall. The social security act is said to benefit 1,309,460 people in Michigan.
Last night in the Bessemer High auditorium sub district speech contests crowned winners in extemporaneous speaking oratory and declamation. Victor Pink Dettry Chisholm and Marion Vukcevich represented Bessemer high school with top placings earning entry to district trials in Trout Creek.
Michigan counties received a 2 1 4 million allotment from the emergency relief administration for April relief work. After 36 years Lincoln mine at Virginia Minnesota owned by Interstate Iron Co a Jones & Laughlin subsidiary is abandoned due to ore depletion. 100 workers will transfer to other Jones & Laughlin mines as Charleson Iron Mining plans an open pit operation at Aurora White to produce about 150000 tons in the 1957 season. New North Range and other holdings expand western Mesabi mining with 80 acre tracts near Grand Lakes.
John Stefanick and Warren Paria, both Bessemer high graduates, formed a clarinet quartet in a winter concert for Moorhead’s Fiftieth Anniversary Concert Band. The group played at the April 7 Armory show sponsored by Amphion Chorus Concordia College and Moorhead State Teachers College. Stefanick, active in college music, is in chapel choir band orchestra and plays first sax in Dragon swing band. Paynter, a freshman, also belongs to band choir and orchestra. Marco Gotta, former Bessemer star athlete, Wakefield Dragon co captain next year, was elected senior Alpha Epsilon member and co leads Dragon swing band for college dances. Gotta is active in music and athletics and helps lead the Dragon swing band with Stefanick and Paynter.
Michigan Tech Engineering Show will be held May 14 and 15 at Houghton. Sixteen students spoke to high school groups during spring vacation, with strong audience interest and plans to attend the expo. Speakers included John Swanson, Ishpeming publicity chair, and engineers from Ironwood Escanaba Manistique Munising LAnse Iron River Rapid River Bessemer Wakefield Stambaugh Crystal Falls Nominee Me nominee.
Gedda Oil Company plans three new gasoline storage tanks of 15 000 gallon capacity this summer on US 2 east of Bessemer. The firm already operates four tanks at the site.
Two Oblate Fathers from Winnipeg Canada conduct a two week mission at St Sebastian Catholic Church delivering sermons and guidance to parishioners as part of a regional outreach program.
Rapids Minnesota notes that Michigan based North Range Mining Co has invaded the Mesabi iron range. The firm already runs the Blueberry mine at Ishpeming and the Forbes mine at Iron River indicating a broader mining expansion into northern Minnesota.
Seven new supervisors join Gogebic county board after this week’s elections, reshaping a 23-member panel. Ironwood supplies three new seats with Meigher, Johnson, and Marander, replacing Mueller, Ravey, and Holmberg. Others gain in Bessemer Wakefield and Irwin townships, while the board readies for reorganization and a new chairman. Two Ironwood city commissioners were elected, with Meigher the youngest ever, topping a 10-candidate field.
John Pascoe a former Bessemer and Ramsay resident died in St Marys hospital Duluth on March 31 at 65 due to pneumonia. Born Mineral Point Wisconsin November 25 1871 he moved to Bessemer as a boy and later worked as master mechanic at Eureka mine and supervisor of Bessemer township. He lived in Hibiting then Duluth and retired 1936 from Universal Portland Cement. Survived by daughter Mrs Walter Chabot of Duluth two sons Percy R Pascoe of Duluth and John W Pascoe of Chicago eight siblings. Funeral held at Johnson mortuary chapel in Duluth with Dr Newton E Moats officiating. Interment in Duluth cemetery.
