Walter James Adamczak 47 a World War II veteran of Ashland died at home after feeling ill soon after raking his yard. Born January 14 1920 in Bessemer he lived in Ashland for many years. He is survived by wife Margaret son Gary stationed in Taiwan and five siblings. Funeral services were held at Pascoe-Gildersleeve Funeral Home with burial in Mount Hope veteran’s plot where American Legion provided military rites.

Gogebic County Mine Inspector Oliver W. Olkonen announced that the Anvil Road from US-2 to the Anvil-Palms area will be closed to traffic for an indefinite period due to a cave in on the east side. About 500 yards down from the hill crest, the cave sits near former Rowe shafts west and Anvil shafts east, with extensive mining in the area and settlements from old underground workings. Precautions are urged despite community disruption, and a thorough study will guide possible reopening once hazards are eliminated.
