Notable rescues and public notices in July era column
The paper recalls a rescuer named John L. Rat pels edal for saving a girl from danger near a mill dam. A Philadelphia lawyer argues on a case about abuse by opposing counsel, while local quips mention a worn coin and a horn serenade gone violent. Navy ships, town weather, and civic notes fill the column with assorted items.
Deaths from cold water claim two Cambridge lives
On Saturday James M Bride, 34, a laborer near Fairmount, died from drinking cold water while overheated. Later that evening in Schuylkill Water street, German, 46, recently arrived in the country, died from the same cause in extreme poverty. The Cambridge Ohio toast list at the fourth of July celebration includes lines praising Hannah More and Sigourney.
