The tale follows Mortimer Wilson born in Westchester who adopts the name Lafitte after meeting the pirate chief aboard the Cleopatra. He narrates battles with Laborde and Lafitte’s power at Barataria, and his choice between piracy and seeking pardon to aid the U.S. cause, including Mary Morton in Charleston and a love triangle with Miss Hansen.
The Berwick Semipel is published every Saturday morning at 6200 per annum payable half yearly in advance or if not paid within the year 250. No subscription will be received for less than six months nor will any paper be discontinued until all accounts are paid. Advertisements not exceeding a square will be inserted three times for 100 and 25 cents for every subsequent insertion longer ones in proportion. Communications by mail must be prepaid otherwise they will not be attended to.
