A Mexican paper reports Senor Don Francisco Pizarro Martinez, long known as the patriotic Mexican Consul at New Orleans, has been appointed Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States. The Diario del Gobierno cites the change as a sign of full Mexican government intent.
The New York Gazette reports a violent clash at the German Reformed Church on Forsyth Street. Two clergymen and their followers fought over the pulpit with rails and clubs, police and firemen intervened, leaving both sides bloodied and the building closed. A thunderstorm on the 11th in Ridgefield killed Mr. Walter Hawley and his son and grandson when lightning struck a cherry tree and traveled into their home. A gentleman in Paris with a friend pockets a corner of the friend’s handkerchief for mischief, but a stranger behind him slips a snuff box into his hand and reveals the ruse. A major blaze erupted in Albany on Friday night around midnight injuring no one reported while destroying several structures and displacing residents. Fire crews fought the flames for hours as investigators began assessing the cause and total loss.
A blaze broke out from a small wooden shop in the centre of the block between Market Hamilton Quay and Division streets. It spread rapidly, destroying several old wooden and frame structures including a three story brick occupied by Ralph Pratt & Co. and others. Insurance varied, with some buildings insured and others uninsured. The fire was halted by a brick Exchange Coffee House and most buildings burned were very old and highly combustible.
The article notes an innovative canal portage boat allowing division at the Railway to transfer freight between canal and railway. From Mexico the Commanche arrives at New Orleans on July 12 with news of Capt Wheelwright and his surgeon escaping prison. Thompson deserts Mexican service for the Texians. The Commanche carries 50,966 pounds in specie and details on exchanges, discipline, and desertions.
From Florida dated St Augustine July 16 reports 17 Cree Indians at Fort King visit Creeks and claim orders not to loot whites. Gen Jesup rode from Tampa to Fort King within 20 paces. His plan is to keep them quiet through summer while arranging troop readiness for actions as circumstances require. He has asked for northern tribes and Choctaws to join measures amid much speculation among readers.
The article contemplates how and when the war will terminate and whether Indians will emigrate in the fall. It reports the murder of Capt. L. Gilleland of Alghama, whose body was found at Itchotuckay springs after his horse died nearby. It notes the escape of murderer J. D. Hugueman from Quincy Jail and a mounted volunteer detachment formed on the 13th for six months under Lieut. Whitehurst.
At Maragnan and Rio Janeiro several Bombyx caterpillars enclose their magnee in cocoons after spinning thicker silk than ordinary. Padre Mestre tested it and found the silk a very solid material. A small edible mulberry grows nearby and is proposed for cultivating to feed the caterpillars.
A Western paper recounts a hardy settler’s supper at an Easton tavern revealing scarce flour and provisions in the West. The bill includes sixteen cups of coffee, three sip loaves, a fried shad, a four pound steak portion, beets, pickles, butter and salt for twenty five cents, illustrating austere frontier dining.
Immense numbers of Indians, chiefly Chippewas from Saginaw, camped on both sides of the St. Clair after descending the rapids in bark canoes. They move from Huron where once their hunting grounds lay, now nearly starving as locals withhold liquor. The piece laments centuries of displacement by the Anglo-Saxon race.
The Bonville Herald notes tensions among the Pottowattamies on the Platte River. Quarrels and drunken brawls sparked by whiskey smuggled by whites threaten peace. An Indian agent named Dr. Davis has faced attacks as the tribes vow to defend their ancestors’ graves.
Greenville Mountaineer reports a Spartanburg to Union Court House postmaster arrested for stealing mail funds. A General Post Office agent supposedly traced thefts over one to two years. Editors urge caution awaiting authentic details and note officials fear detection is improving for mail money cases.
From the Texas dispatches the spy Powell, known as the spy of Texas, was shot and killed in Columbia after a street dispute with Doctor Humphries. Powell aided Texas in the late war and was honored for daring deeds. News notes 1200 Texian troops furloughed, army about 500, scarce provisions, flour at $30 per barrel. Mexican fleet rumored near Galveston. Texas navy ready to respond. No interior political news.
Mr Slater a respected mechanic and rigger fell about seventy feet from the mainmast of a schooner tied at Line Mercer's wood wharf. He struck the pump with his head, his brains scattered, and his chest was laid open in the grim injury described.
