Groppi vows to reclose Wisconsin Capitol

MADISON AP Police herded Rev James Groppi and about 200 welfare demonstrators from the Wisconsin Capitol as the militant civil rights leader vowed to return. National Guardsmen surrounded the Capitol to prevent re entry after the eviction ended a takeover of the Assembly chambers. There were no arrests as lawmakers prepared to resume the welfare and urban aid bill debate. Groppi led a 90 mile march from Milwaukee to Madison, entering the Capitol about an hour before the special session began. Over 2,600 protesters, many University of Wisconsin students, filled the chambers and desks during speeches before the Assembly adjourned amid the disruption.
