China plans Mao ceremony as 20th anniversary marked
Tokyo dispatch reports China will honor its 20th anniversary with nuclear fireworks and has announced Mao Tse-tung and heir Lin Piao will attend Wednesday ceremonies in Beijing at Tiananmen Square. The announcement aims to quell health rumors about Mao and Lin amid continued secrecy on nuclear tests, including a Monday atmospheric explosion of about 2 megatons at Lop Nor.

Laird Backs Nixon Plan For Draft
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird urged Congress to approve Nixon's draft lottery proposal to cut uncertainty for young men and lower draft calls in coming months. He said the lottery would reduce the seven year eligibility span to one year for 19 year olds as Vietnam troop levels fall. The hearing before a House Armed Services subcommittee weighed whether Congress would repeal the 1967 Draft Act ban on a lottery, with Republicans and Democrats expressing cautious openness.
