New Orders to U.S. Far East Missions Policy Shrinks Role
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield reported that U.S. missions in the Far East are under orders to follow Nixon's policy of reduced American involvement in Asia. He said aid will be cooperative economic support, not military, and Asian nations should handle their own defense with limited outside help. Mansfield, who toured Philippines Indonesia Cambodia Burma and Laos, said no follow up by U.S. missions was found and officials have been reminded of Guam statements.

Anchorage AP reports the aircraft carrier Princeton neared Alaska to stand by for an underground nuclear explosion at Amchitka Island. Official date not set as the first in a three test series draws international disapproval from Japan and Canada over potential shipping and fishing impacts. In Nome residents face a holiday preview as plastic Christmas trees arrive, live trees being 740 miles away due to heavy snow.
