Vandals struck the Dawes United Fund drive causing damage and disruption ahead of Halloween. Police said suspects damaged display materials and sponsorship banners, hindering fundraising efforts and prompting an investigation. Local officials urged residents to report any clues.
Damage at Dawes School on Elm Street is reported as the worst in years with $4,000 to $7,000 in losses. Police questioned several teenagers after intruders entered via a side door, smashing, painting, and water damage ensued. Fire extinguishers emptied, records ruined, and classrooms battered. cleanup crews aided by teachers worked to restore order.

Massachusetts property owners face a $40 million rise to fund higher costs of government. Cities and towns will need $70 million more, said Edward C. Wilson, associate commissioner of taxation. He noted 1983 tax rates jumped as towns reassessed all property at 100 percent of fair cash value.
