A compressed gas ignition caused a blast at the Indiana Coliseum during the Holiday on Ice pageant climax. Gov Welsh and Sheriff Nicholas vow investigation as 67 dead and 331 injured follow the explosion that sent bodies and debris across the arena.
Police sought a motive for the blast at the Red Barn Restaurant in Chicopee Massachusetts as more than 100 patrons gathered. The charge exploded at the rear shattering seven windows but caused no injuries. A woman was knocked from a barstool and a witness noted the flash lit the interior like daylight.
In Marietta Georgia a downtown Halloween celebration ends in tragedy as a drugstore blast kills seven and injures at least 25. Firefighters and civil defense teams search debris through the night as authorities probe possible gas leak causes. Among the dead is Joe Ben Carter and his son Terry with others including Danny and Bobby injured outside.
Governor Peabody warned Massachusetts highway funds depend on a one cent per gallon gas tax increase. House plans a $125 million program rely on $75 million state funds and $50 million bond issue. He warned without the gas tax the state cannot maintain roads snow removal police protection and the MDC road system. He praised legislature for endorsing a DPW reorganization but would not appoint Ricciardi to a new five member board.
Governor Peabody telephoned DPW Commissioner Jack P. Ricciardi to commiserate over his imminent unemployment as a result of the Public Works Department overhaul. He said the action is not personal and noted he liked Ricciardi while explaining the restructuring fight.
King Hassan II said Algerian forces attacked Figuig, Morocco, and ordered Moroccan troops to withdraw. He announced Morocco would not counter-attack and would honor Bamako peace pledges to seek a negotiated frontier settlement. Algerian artillery and mortars hit the town. casualties were reported.
Washington report notes a Pittsfield meeting on industrial diversification away from General Electric. Kenneth Deblieu says the Navy can help by bidding low on qualified ordnance jobs. GE's Gene Peterson cites rising competition and softer demand, but remains confident the ordnance department will stay a major Polaris system producer. Williams College with a foundation gift buys the remainder of Mount Hope Farm on Green River Road from Lenox Hill Hospital for 325000. The former Prentice estate, spanning about 1.2 acres in Berkshire Hills, will remain on Williams town tax rolls. President John E. Sawyer says the purchase aims to develop the property, preserve community character, expand town activities, and strengthen the local tax base. Further studies will guide residential use and tax producing plans, with parts for research.
Rebels seize control of Saigon as heavy street fighting erupts around the presidential palace. Diem’s palace guard penetrated. reports say Diem may be aboard a naval vessel. No word on Ngo Dinh Nhu. Madame Nhu travels in the United States. U.S. officials caution on coup’s success.
President Kennedy presided over an urgent morning session with top military and diplomatic advisers to assess what U S officials called a coup of real proportions against the Ngo Dinh Diem regime in South Vietnam. The gathering tracked hours of rapid developments as Rusk McNamara Taylor Harriman Hilsman Bundy and possibly CIA chief McCone were involved.
The Pentagon ordered U S forces in the Pacific to move toward South Vietnam as a precaution to protect American lives. The 7th Fleet units lead the movement with possible air and growth units. Assistant Defense Secretary Arthur Sylvester called the orders purely precautionary.
The Soviet Union launched an unmanned space vehicle named flight one using a telemetric transmitter on 19.945 megacycles. Tass reported extensive maneuvering in near-earth space with a 102.5 minute initial orbit, engines switching on and off under a prearranged plan while all systems operated normally.
