Crowther Finds Movies a Shared Enterprise for All
Williams College heard Bosley Crowther argue that going to the movies remains a broad public business with 45 million weekly viewers. He notes television diverting audiences but grosses still reach about 1.3 billion yearly, with hits like Cleopatra and The Longest Day eclipsing past records. Crowther praises foreign films, criticizes censorship as hypocritical, and likens his reviews to judging a meal, insisting motion pictures will remain a strong artistic medium despite shifts in audience taste. He closes by asserting cinema’s enduring artistic potential and a positive outlook for the industry.
