Kennedy Urges Soft Civil Rights Bill Passage
Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy urged the House Judiciary Committee to trim the civil rights bill, favoring the seven party administration version over the harsher 10 part package. He warned broad amendments could alienate middle ground Republicans and delay passage, saying the milder bill could win votes and become law by year end. Some liberals criticized his stance as insufficient while Kennedy warned stronger powers risk a national police force. The bill faces a lengthy path through committees and floor votes before possible passage.

Senate hearing links New England crime bosses to rackets
Senate investigators named Haymond L. Patriarca of Providence and Genaro J. Angulo of Medford as the top figures behind organized crime in New England. Rhode Island State Police Col. Walter E. Stone Boston Police Commissioner Edmund McNamara and Deputy Supt. John Howland described Patriarca as the region’s controlling force with offices in Boston and Worcester. They cited jockeying for unions, strong-arming, wire service provision, and illegal gambling as main income sources, and noted two aides Rossi and Vitale as major fences. The officials backed Kennedy wiretap laws and discussed a Worcester 1959 meeting linked to underworld activity.
