Pittsfield Car Insurance Rates Jump in 1964 Increases

Massachusetts insurance data show most drivers will see small premium decreases, but Pittsfield rates rise from 15.2 to 27 percent. A basic premium of 34 dollars applies to non commuting, non under-25 unmarried drivers, while under-25 non-married drivers with no approved schooling see 90 dollars. Berkshire County towns mostly dip 50 cents, with Territory 15 noting a shift from Territory 16.

Latin Replaced in Sacraments by Ecumenical Council

In Vatican City Ecumenical Council fathers approved the use of modern languages instead of Latin in Roman Catholic weddings funerals baptisms and other sacraments by a vote of 2103 to 19. They also renamed the sacrament of extreme unction the last rites to the sacrament of the anointing of the sick by 2143 to 5 to emphasize it is not only for the dying.

Wyandotte Worsted Plant to Close in Pittsfield

Wyandotte Worsted Co. will shut its Pittsfield plant on Keeler Street on October 26, idling just under 100 workers. A company spokesman blamed cheap imports and slow federal action for harming domestic woolen manufacturing. The Wyandotte chain, with mills in four states, has operated in Pittsfield since 1931, with peak local employment around 500 during World War II.

State Survey of Tourists Finds Tanglewood on Top

The report by the U S Department of Commerce ranks Tanglewood in Western Massachusetts as the top tourist spot in the state with Cape Cod Old Sturbridge Village and Boston area also cited among favorites. Historic sites and scenery draw visitors while Boston earns the most adverse comments for congestion and dirty conditions.

Senate Retreat Passes DPW Reform Bill in Boston

Algeria recaptures two desert outposts after Monday clash

In Algiers, radio claimed Algerian forces retook two desert outposts near Hassi-Beida and Tinjoub lost earlier Monday to Moroccan troops supported by tanks planes and heavy artillery. Morocco reported no casualties and said fighting ended after occupation. Algerian minister Bouteflika warned of a counterattack as tensions rise along the border.

Europe and U S Agree to Panel Over Chicken Tariffs

The European Common Market backs down and will submit the chicken tariff dispute with the United States to an impartial panel. The ministers from France West Germany Italy Belgium Holland and Luxembourg refer the decision to a drafting committee before final action. The U S claims yearly losses of 46 million dollars from European tariffs on frozen poultry and seeks tariff reductions. The current levy stands at 13.48 cents a pound.

Gore protests telegrams over tax bill pressure

Senate hearings on Kennedy tax cut opened amid claims of political intimidation. Senator Albert Gore Jr of Tennessee charged a seven page telegram from William Keel of the DNC urged local leaders to back the tax program and advise Gore to support it. Senator Herman Talmadge agreed the telegram aimed to pressure Gore and coerce support.

Burning Fires Banned as Massachusetts Faces Drought

Unseasonably warm weather drives a burning index of 90 prompting Governor Peabody to ban all open fires statewide. Forester Foster cites lack of rainfall and a long hot season as causes. 111 fires were reported across Massachusetts yesterday with Pittsfield dispatching crews for grass and brush fires as water supplies remain adequate from five reservoirs.
