Connecticut's first moose dies after tranquilizer shooting ends it
A lone moose, first confirmed in Connecticut over a century ago, wandered across the state for months before being cornered near a gasoline storage area in East Hartford. Police and Game officials attempted to save it with a tranquilizer gun, but the animal died, apparently worn down by its long journey. Sightings had occurred in Niantic State Forest and Groton, with prior records in Athol, Ware, and Greenfield.

October Mountain Moose and Public Forest History
The Berkshire piece recalls Old Bill the moose from the William Whitney game preserve on October Mountain, his death in 1920 after a hunter wounded him, and Wardens Sargood and local collectors preserving the antlers for the Berkshire Museum. It then moves to October Mountain’s public access, neglected lands, and the 1921 public fundraising leading to state forest acquisition with gifts and sales, highlighting conservation and public ownership.

Buckleyism and Birchism divide the GOP cannibalizing it
In a 1964 House records entry William F Buckley of Stamford contributed 50 dollars to liberal Democrat Donald Irwin. Buckley aims to undermine Republican moderates like Lindsay in New York and Sibal in Connecticut, signaling factional rupture within the party. Nixon called Buckleyite strains a greater threat than the Birchers.
