Richard A. Jones of 137 Daniels Avenue tried to speed up his wife by placing a knife between the brake and gas pedals as he started their car. His wife drove across the street and struck 136 Daniels Avenue, prompting police involvement and revealing the risky stunt.
The U N General Assembly approved by acclamation a call for new disarmament talks in Geneva to form an 18 nation commission in 1964. The resolution, backed by 47 nations, seeks general disarmament under international control and steps to reduce tensions between East and West.
In Moscow Pravda says the Soviet Union wants cooperation with the United States in peace and economic and cultural fields. The U S Embassy protests the Barghoorn arrest, diplomats boycott a 30th anniversary event, and editors defer noting tensions. Zorin comments on next steps remain unclear.
President Arturo Illia announced in Buenos Aires that Argentina nullified multimillion-dollar oil contracts with American and foreign companies. He ordered the nation’s petroleum production and development placed entirely under state control, with unclear scope regarding refining operations.
The Senate passed a 3.702 billion foreign aid bill after 15 days of debate, cutting Kennedy’s request by about 827 million and adding restraints he warned would hobble policy. Vote was 63 to 17 with 43 Democrats and 20 Republicans in favor. New England senators backed passage. A Grain Tie-In was shelved amid behind the scenes bargaining.
President Kennedy appealed before the AFL-CIO national convention in New York, urging labor backing to push the tax bill through Congress this year. New York AP report notes Fritz Reiner 74 famed conductor and former Chicago Symphony Music Director died after pneumonia. He canceled a Metropolitan Opera performance. he had a long U.S. career starting 1922 with Cincinnati Symphony and also led Pittsburgh Symphony. He joined Chicago in 1953, resigned after a heart attack nine years later, but continued recording.
The Massachusetts Senate approved a 125 million highway construction bill by a 28 to 9 vote, clearing the way for prorogation of the lengthy session. Gov Endicott Peabody signed a departments reorganization bill at Chelsea Soldiers Hospital. The highway plan includes arbitration to resolve local vetoes by 10 communities with a 90 day limit.
BEIRUT Lebanon AP Members of the Baath Socialist party international command headed by a Syrian announced Friday they are assuming control of Iraq after a struggle that threatened revolution. Michel Aflak and mixed Baathist generals from Iraq and Syria have taken over the government. They exiled Deputy Premier Saadi and his rivals Taleb Shebib and Hazem Jawad, who arrived in Beirut. Saadi awaits recall in Madrid. The command aims to form a new Iraq cabinet and maintain party unity amid divergent factional views.
