Silverless Coins Begin Circulation Amid Coin Reform
Washington reports the first release of 23 million copper nickel two layer quarters, not silver but still worth 25 cents for ice cream and cake. Dimes follow next year and 50 cent pieces later in 1966 while pennies nickels and the silver dollar remain mostly unchanged. Congress banned new silver coin production for five years to conserve silver. The mint will issue silver coins until new silverless types meet needs, keeping 13 billion existing coins in circulation.
