Rising costs loom over Dalton school building plan
In Dalton, 37 attendees heard Regional School Committee Chairman Martin J. Cooney warn that labor costs are rising and delaying the 3.7 million school project would worsen matters. Operating costs add 4.32 to the 1970 Dalton tax rate, pushing total 1970 impact to 11.48 per thousand and 16.50 for 1971. Officials cited 1.68 million in operating costs for this year, rising to 2.15 million by 1971, regardless of construction. A town meeting on the proposal is set for next Wednesday at Waheonah Regional High School, with another briefing Sunday at the Episcopal Church Guild Hall.

Alternatives Cost More Says Cooney In Dalton Debate
Dalton residents hear Martin J. Cooney defend regional school building plans amid talks of higher costs. He notes alternatives are pricier and urges funding through state channels to protect education. The committee trimmed the project from 4.8 to 3.7 million and points to already spent 47 thousand on related programs. Authorities warn general costs may rise 6 percent, risking higher taxes and burdening families, seniors, and buyers. Community notices include a St Agnes carwash fundraiser, library closure, a diet workshop, a Hinsdale Lions paper drive, and Lakeview Florist open hours through Memorial Day.
