Artificial Womb Extends Life of Fetuses in Lamb Trials
Artificial lung technology kept 33 unborn lambs alive for up to 24 percent days after removal from wombs. Researchers at National Heart Institute led by Drs Kolobow Zapol and Pierce tested an extracorporeal oxygenator to aid fetal circulation and respiration. Two babies with hyaline membrane disease also benefited briefly, while infection caused deaths in the system. The work marks a possible path for treating newborn respiratory distress.
