Holyoke Shad Derby Signals Strong Run in Polluted Rivers
The Holyoke shad run opens amid concerns over Connecticut River pollution in Massachusetts. Based on Halyske dam lifts, 6,241 shad were counted by Monday night, far above last year’s 1,064. Several species pass the dam, but no salmon has yet appeared in a decade of checks. Fishermen debate eating tainted fish, while calls grow to restore salmon runs if river pollution ends. Harold Kahn reports good Florida fishing news, and local officials announce annual trips and mushroom forays as well as boat registration reminders. New York campsites open May 26 with varying capacities and $1.50 per night permits.
