Humphrey Warns South On School Desegregation
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey warned the South that desegregation of public schools is mandatory with or without federal aid. He said districts not desegregating will be sued under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, or lose federal funds. In New York, Martin Luther King Jr. urged peaceful marches while praising civil rights gains and poverty programs. In Alabama, Ku Klux Klan leader Robert Creel vowed continued power, and a riot near Bogalusa, Louisiana, interrupted a planned integration event. The Senate also moved to allow Puerto Ricans with basic schooling to vote without English comprehension.
