Scientists Find Clue to Lemming Mass Die-Off Cycle
New Alaska research near Point Barrow challenges classic theories of lemming cycles. Two California researchers Dr. David A. Mullen of San Francisco and Dr. William B. Quay of Berkeley identify a lemming blood substance acting as antifreeze and a population suppressor by attacking the brain, allowing winter activity and later die-offs that permit tundra recovery. The substance may exist in other Arctic mammals.
