The Senate rejected the Ervin proposed amendment to Johnson’s voting rights bill by 64 to 25, paving the way for a showdown on bigger issues. Kennedy and Saltonstall voted no, while the bill’s fate hinges on measures to outlaw state and local poll taxes and expand federal examiners where evidence of discrimination appears.

Senate panel approves 3 year reprieve on cigarette warnings
The Senate Commerce Committee approved a bill to require health hazard warnings on cigarette packages with a three year exemption for advertisers. The FTC had ordered warnings effective July 1 but the committee, by unanimous vote, said the agency cannot force ads to carry warnings while preserving authority to halt false advertising. The warning would read Caution: cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health. The House commerce committee was approaching a similar decision on package labels.

States Asked To Pay for Commuters
The New Haven Railroad offered to drop its threat to end commuter service to New York City if New York State and Connecticut provide cash for passenger trains. Lawyer Joseph Auerbach said the states must supply funds by July to allow the railroad to withdraw its plan to curtail service between Stamford Connecticut and New York City on August 1. The ICC hearing highlighted the railroad’s claim that commuter service is profitable when rental income from nearby hotels is counted.
