GE Engineer Paces Berkshire Boundary Markers Across State Line
Rudolph W. Strobel, a GE distribution cutout engineer in Pittsfield, spent weekends mapping and pacing the Maine? No, Berkshire boundary markers from Connecticut to Vermont. He explains markers at one mile intervals, granite or cast iron, with 12 to 18 inch milers and five foot tall intermediates. Since 1898, about 114 markers exist, with roads long vanished and some hard to reach. Strobel uses topo maps, compass bearings, and an altimeter to stay on azimuth, pacing 50.3 miles in total. He is a native of Erie, Pennsylvania and a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club.
