New Readers Distributed In Elementary Schools
The School Department received 570 cartons of new readers for elementary schools as part of a sweeping reading program. Assistant Superintendent Lincoln D. Lynch notes distribution is underway and full implementation across 20 schools should occur by next fall. Early shipment allows immediate use and summer study for instructors. The Ginn & Company books aim to tailor instruction to individual differences and feature a broader phonetic program. The cost adds about $25,000 to this year’s elementary textbooks budget, with plans to cut costs in future years. So far three schools have begun using the new readers.
