McNeil Finds Armory Location Poor for City Use
Planning Director Gerald F. McNeil reports the Summer Street Armory’s disadvantages outweigh benefits as Planning Board and Public Works HQ. He says moving the buildings superintendent away from City Hall Annex adds no gain and that old Armory offers only free rent plus costly renovations. He notes Hawthorne Avenue would be unsuitable for interdepartmental work and school storage might be the Armory’s best use. Councilman James E. Richmann files for a feasibility study to use part of the Armory as the City Council chamber, replacing the current district court room as meeting space.
