Titan I, a 111 foot ICBM weighing about 250000 pounds, launched from an underground silo at Vandenberg AFB California under war time conditions. The two stage missile followed a 5000 mile Pacific range toward its target as part of SAC testing on alert status for two years.
A Boston based commission urged repeal of Massachusetts laws banning birth control advice and literature. The 18 member panel led by Harvard Divinity School’s George H. Williams endorsed allowing physicians to offer drugs or devices for contraception with prescriptions or to those 21 and older. The report notes no civil or criminal malpractice for failure to furnish information and emphasizes cross faith cooperation toward amending the laws.

A Berlin subway train rear ended another near the Zoo station in West Berlin today injuring 130 people. No deaths were reported in the incident, the worst subway accident there since 1908, occurring about 300 yards outside the Zoo station, the busiest area in downtown Berlin.
Government troops claimed a major victory 40 miles southwest of Saigon in a search and destroy operation. The clash cost two American lives and left 32 government troops wounded, while Viet Cong casualties were tallied at 255 dead. The attack also involved heavy fighting near Cheo Reo and Thuan Mon as American and Vietnamese air power supported ground troops. four Marines killed and four wounded, and two U.S. air crewmen survived a crash at Da Nang.
STOCKBRIDGE and Lenox officials note a new amendment to Massachusetts conflict of interest law restricts towns over 1,000 population from naming officials as special municipal employes. Effective July 26, the change could limit candidates such as lawyers or electricians who are sole providers in small towns, prompting concerns about candidate pools and town business. The act aims to reduce conflicts in leadership across the state, with 176 towns under 4,000 population affected.
In Laconia New Hampshire UPI reports the first acquittal in the Weirs Beach rioting trials. Allen Giles 18 of Danvers Massachusetts was freed by District Court Judge Bernard I Snierson. Four of 33 arrested have been convicted. two other defendants James Jalbert Tilton NH and Douglas McClellan Shrewsbury Massachusetts faced trial. Giles appeared without an attorney, his father Robert Giles defending. A trooper witness admitted doubt about Giles identity and a photo suggested mistaken identity.
Police seek a burglar in Van Nuys who broke into a nursery at night, loaded a $200 truck with lawn furniture, then backed into a gate, damaged two apartment buildings, bumped nine cars, and plowed a cement block fence before fleeing on foot leaving $200 in furniture and about $15,000 in property damage.
