Fire Damage Heavy At Berkshire Inn
GREAT BARRINGTON An early morning blaze damaged the southern third of the Berkshire Inn on Main Street. Three people were injured while about 100 firefighters from six area companies battled the fire from 8:30 to shortly after 10. The fire started in a third floor guest room and spread to the attic after staff failed to quell it with extinguishers. No official cause yet but a cigarette is suspected. There were 19 guests reported. 15 permanent and four transients stayed last night. Injured: Edward McCormick 18 a Great Barrington firefighter treated for a nail injury. Edward McMahon 45 inn employee and Mrs Juanita Wright 35 both smoke inhalation victims. All others escaped uninjured. By 8:50 about 30 firefighters entered the building working toward the attic. Ground crews sprayed water from the sides while others dampened adjacent areas. Six hydrants supplied water from Berkshire Heights East Mountain and Lake Mansfield. Fire Chief Cavanaugh said over 5,000 feet of hose were used and extensive smoke and fire damage to the southern section. Mutual aid came from Egremont Sheffield Stockbridge New Marlborough Housatonic and Great Barrington. Stockbridge and New Marlborough covered local station while Lee and West Stockbridge were on standby. The inn is valued at 90 000 and owned by Wheeler Taylor Inc. Wheeler & Taylor President Robert K Wheeler said the property would be closed for the summer. Roof debris littered the driveway and grounds.
